PNG Image Format
Portable Network Graphics
What is PNG?
PNG is a popular image format for graphics, screenshots, logos, illustrations, and images that need transparency. It preserves image detail without the quality loss associated with lossy compression.
When to use PNG
- Graphics with sharp edges, text, or line art
- Screenshots and UI elements
- Logos and illustrations
- Images that require transparency
- When lossless quality is essential
Advantages
- Lossless compression — no quality loss
- Supports alpha transparency
- Widely supported by all browsers and image editors
- Good for images with text and sharp edges
Disadvantages
- Larger file sizes for photographs compared to JPG, WebP, or AVIF
- Not ideal for photographic content due to lack of lossy compression
- No animation support (use APNG or WebP for animation)
Transparency
PNG supports full alpha-channel transparency, meaning each pixel can be partially or fully transparent. This makes PNG ideal for logos and UI elements that need to overlay on different backgrounds.
PNG vs other formats
PNG vs JPG: PNG is lossless and supports transparency; JPG is lossy and smaller for photographs.
PNG vs WebP: WebP can match PNG quality at smaller file sizes while also supporting transparency.
PNG vs AVIF: AVIF offers better compression than PNG for most images, with transparency support.
