AVIF Image Format
AV1 Image File Format
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format that can provide efficient compression and high image quality. It is useful when reducing image file sizes is important while retaining visual detail.
When to use AVIF
- When maximum compression is the priority
- Web images where bandwidth savings matter
- Images that need transparency with small file size
- Modern websites targeting current browsers
Advantages
- Best compression of any supported format — often 50% smaller than JPG
- Supports alpha transparency
- Supports HDR (High Dynamic Range)
- Good visual quality at low bitrates
Disadvantages
- Slower encoding than JPG or WebP
- Less universal browser support than JPG (though all modern browsers support it)
- Some older image editors may not support it
Transparency
AVIF supports full alpha transparency, making it suitable as a replacement for PNG when the smallest possible file size is needed.
Browser compatibility
AVIF is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It is supported by all major modern browsers, making it suitable for web use alongside WebP.
AVIF vs other formats
AVIF vs JPG: AVIF can be 50% smaller than JPG at similar visual quality.
AVIF vs PNG: AVIF offers dramatically smaller files while supporting transparency.
AVIF vs WebP: AVIF provides better compression but slower encoding. WebP is a good middle ground.
